Orihuela Town Council plenary session

Today, 23 December, Orihuela Town Council is holding its last plenary session of the year, with issues that are causing significant concern among the residents of Orihuela Costa

Ayto Orihuela costa

Last plenary session of 2025

One of the points of greatest interest to the residents of Orihuela Costa is the details of the request for the delegation of powers to the Regional Ministry of Health for the construction of a second health centre in Orihuela Costa.

According to the proposal, the new health centre would be located on a plot of land currently designated for school use, which would require a change of use to healthcare.

This would be the first step for the relevant Regional Ministry to study and, if appropriate, approve the project.

Could the application be rejected?

We say ‘if applicable’ because it cannot be ruled out that, within a year or a year and a half, the application will be rejected for failing to meet one or more of the technical requirements.

This would not be a new development in Orihuela Costa; unfortunately, it has already happened to us in previous situations.

If this site ultimately meets all the requirements, the result would be that we would have replaced a possible and also necessary secondary school with a health centre, which opens up an important debate about the actual planning of public services on the coast.

If it is approved, reasonable doubts will arise.

• Are we sure that there are no other plots of land designated for public services in Orihuela Costa?

• Do we have other plots of land and their classifications are not well known, or has it been decided to change the use of the only one that has been located?

• Has a clear and up-to-date inventory been made of the plots with the available facilities?

With the land issue resolved, we move on to financing

In principle, this should not be an obstacle, given that Orihuela City Council has millions of euros in the bank.

The item to be voted on in today's plenary session is the delegation of powers, specifically, whether the Valencian Regional Government will transfer the execution of the project.

And here the doubts return:

• Who exactly is carrying out the work and under what model?

• Is the Generalitat ( Regional gobernment) paying for it in full?

• From which budgets?

No budget for 2026

Let us remember that there is no approved budget for 2026, nor has its processing even been considered urgent, and the current accounts for 2025 have been formally extended.

So, the question is clear

Where would the funds for this health centre come from?

Hopefully, all these questions are just reasonable doubts that will be clarified with facts, deadlines and guarantees.

What the residents of Orihuela Costa do not want, once again, are false promises.
